Children with Disability Support Program

Overview

The Children with Disability Support Program of the Budondo Women Development Association (BUWODA) is dedicated to promoting inclusion, dignity, and equal opportunities for children with disabilities in rural communities.
Many children in rural Uganda face stigma, neglect, and limited access to education and healthcare due to physical or developmental disabilities. BUWODA works to break these barriers by ensuring that every child — regardless of ability — is valued, supported, and given a chance to reach their full potential.

As women, mothers, and caregivers, we believe that we cannot speak of empowerment while leaving our children with disabilities behind. True empowerment begins with inclusion — ensuring that every child, no matter their condition, is given love, care, and opportunity.

Our Focus

BUWODA supports children with a wide range of disabilities, including:

  • Physical disabilities (such as limb deformities, paralysis, and mobility challenges)

  • Visual impairments (including partial and complete blindness)

  • Hearing and speech impairments

  • Intellectual and developmental disabilities (such as Down syndrome, autism, and learning difficulties)

Our approach centers on compassion, inclusion, and empowerment. The program addresses key challenges such as:

  • Social stigma and discrimination against children living with disabilities.

  • Limited access to inclusive education and assistive learning materials.

  • Poor access to healthcare and rehabilitation services in rural areas.

  • Lack of caregiver support and awareness on how to care for children with special needs.

What We Do

To promote inclusion and improve the wellbeing of children with disabilities, BUWODA implements the following interventions:

  • Inclusive Education Support: Partnering with schools to promote inclusive learning environments and provide assistive materials such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, walking aids, and braille books.

  • Health and Rehabilitation: Facilitating medical checkups, therapy referrals, and access to basic assistive devices for children in need.

  • Caregiver Empowerment: Training parents and guardians on disability rights, caregiving skills, and access to social services.

  • Community Awareness: Conducting community dialogues to reduce stigma and promote acceptance and protection of children with disabilities.

  • Advocacy for Inclusion: Working with local leaders and policymakers to ensure that disability rights are recognized and integrated into community development programs.

Our Impact

Through this initiative, BUWODA has helped transform attitudes towards children with disabilities in Budondo and surrounding rural areas. Families are now more supportive, communities are becoming more inclusive, and more children with disabilities are attending school and participating in social activities.
